What normally would be a time of the year in Thailand, Monsoon Season, when I would carry around an umbrella (not that it does much good when the rain is falling sideways) and my rubber flip flops, is a time where I find myself dining outdoors more often than not.

The rainfall totals for this year all over Thailand have been at record lows. While some people welcome the relief from flooded streets and frizzy hair, the water collected from rainfall is vital for agriculture, industrial and other uses. Many are starting to experience the impacts from the drought.

In order to assist with the current situation, there are many ways that we all can help conserve water with a little bit of conscious effort while we brush our teeth, shower, clean the dishes, and the list is endless. You can make a positive impact by conserving water while travelling and at home. Plus, at home if you conserve more water – you can save more money!

Here are some tips:

Sing one less song in the shower to reduce shower time.
Try to average only 4-5 minutes in the shower when possible. Every minute you are in the shower (using a conventional shower head) about 5 gallons of water is used.
Shut off the water when it is not needed.
When you are brushing your teeth, washing your face, or scrubbing your hands, turn the water off when it is not being used.
Opt for a shower instead of a bath.
Having a bath or even a long shower uses about 4 times more water than a 5-minute shower.
Fill a bowl to shave.
Use a bowl with a little bit of water to rinse the razor instead of keeping the water running. You can also then use the water from the bowl to water plants.
Shower with your partner.
This water saving technique is good for all year round, not only Valentine’s Day!
Reuse towels and sheets.
Most hotels will not wash towels hanging, only those placed on the floor. Use your towel for the entirety of your stay and save tons of water. At home, you can also not wash your towels and sheets as often.
